Fred Newman

The following article was published months before Newman and 40 followers disbanded Centers for Change and joined Lyndon LaRouche's National Caucus of Labor Committees. The document provides insight into the following: (1) Fred Newman's motives for supporting LaRouche (i.e., his desire to create "a Marxist political psychology which could be used to bring out the boundless enthusiasm of the masses for socialism"), (2) his disdain towards other progressives who refuse to follow his lead, (3) his refutation of any and all public condemnation of LaRouche, and (4) that Newman clearly understood and believed in the concept of mind control. Newman and his followers have continually denied knowledge of NCLC's reputation prior to their joining LaRouche's organization, but this, his own publication, clearly indicates otherwise. Finally, the article clearly demonstrates that Newman's express intent was/is to "develop" political cadre in a therapeutic environment.

Germany 1934: The United States 1974

Right on Time, March 1974

Germany. June 1934

"Various groups in the movement today are using strategy and tactics against one another. What we must do above all, if we mean to achieve success, is to face these fundamental problems with completely new ideas, completely new methods of influencing the masses, with a completely new structure in terms of both ideology and personnel.

"We hardly need to supply detailed arguments to prove that we failed to speak the language of the broad masses-the nonpolitical or ideologically oppressed broad masses-who in the end assured the triumph of reaction. The masses did not understand our resolutions, or what we meant by socialism; they did not and still do not trust us. They read our papers out of a sense of duty, or not at all. Those who joined the Movement had an inarticulate socialist feeling, but we were incapable of turning this feeling to advantage and in the end our incapacity carried Hitler to power.

"One element in the fundamental cause of the failure of socialism-only an element, but an important one, no longer to be ignored, no longer to be regarded as secondary-is the absence of an effective Marxist doctrine of political psychology. This does not merely mean that such a doctrine still remains to be created; it also means that the working class as a whole is extremely wary of psychological examination, of conscious practical psychology. This shortcoming of ours has become the greatest advantage of the class enemy, the mightiest weapon of fascism. While we presented the masses with superb historical analyses and economic treatises on the contradictions of imperialism, Hitler stirred the deepest roots of their emotional being."

Wilhelm Reich
Germany, 1931

United States, March 1974

It's forty years later. Rockefeller and his gang of fascists have developed a brand of fascism that makes Hitler took like a street bully. The Rockefeller-CIA fascists have developed the Hitlerian model over the last thirty years to a point of sophistication that almost overwhelms the mind. Emanating from Tavistock Institute in Britain and the National Training Laboratories in the United States, a world-wide brainwashing network has been set up which destroys the minds of the oppressed masses in every aspect of our lives. From the obvious mind destruction of psychosurgery, chemotherapy, lobotomy, shock treatment used on mental patients and political prisoners, to the less obvious but equally insidious pacification therapy of R.D. Laing, William Schutz, transactional analysis, T-group, Encounter Group, etc.; from the speed up and worker inducement programs for laborers to SPARK programs for high school students; from subliminal mind-control advertising on television to conscious mind-control advertising on television; from hoax reported in ruling class newspaper which confuse the minds of the working masses and so on. From morning till night, seven days a week, the working masses are exposed to a brainwashing carefully researched by the Rockefeller fascists and imposed by a technology never before available in human history. All this has been prepared over the last thirty years in expectation of the economic collapse of international capitalism. AND NOW THE TIME IS AT HAND. International capitalism is collapsing and fascism is just around the corner. The great fascist machine which has been brainwashing the masses for thirty years has now been sped up in preparation for the international fascist coup that Rockefeller and his man in the White House, Henry Kissinger, are preparing.

The American Movement

And where is the Movement today, forty years later! It is working for the fascists! They are "using strategy and tactics against one another." The Movement is separated from the masses. The movement has been developed by the CIA fascists to further brainwash and confuse the masses. The Movement does not function to mobilize the masses. Rather the broad masses simply do not trust the Movement. The broad masses have good reason to mistrust the Movement. For the Movement in recent years has functioned as a CIA petty bourgeois phenomenon which MISTRUSTS THE MASSES as petty bourgeois intellectuals are prone to do. The mistrust of the Movement by the masses is justifiable. The masses have not been reached by the Movement because the Movement does not serve the masses-it participates in the destruction of the masses. As Mao Tsetung has pointed out, "The masses have a potentially inexhaustible enthusiast for socialism. Those who can only follow the old routine in a revolutionary period are utterly incapable of seeing this enthusiasm."

The Movement "heavies" are brainwashed lackeys of the CIA, rigidly locked into old routines which prevent them from seeing the reality of the world crisis and prevents them from seeing the potential enthusiasm of the masses for socialism.

For as the world is destroyed; as the fascists take over, where is the Movement? The movement is writing petty bourgeois letters to the United Front Vanguard of SCLC, NUWRO, RYM and CFC-a vanguard which serves the masses by taking seriously the task before the human race today. The publication of "A Message to the Masses of the Peoples Beware of the Movement" two weeks ago in Right On Time has brought a not-surprising response from the Movement. CFC will continue to expose the bourgeois temper tantrums of the Movement to the masses of the people. What was the response of the Movement to the article which correctly identified the Movement for what it is and appealed to the responsible progressives in the Movement to unite and carry on the work of serving the people by mobilizing the people? What was the Movement response? The Oakland-based Black Panther Party-New York City chapter-refused to meet with us because of our association with NCLC. This chapter of the Panthers has worked together with CFC, using space in our building for political education workshops-and CFC workers had visited with the Oakland Panthers in Oakland just about a month ago at the invitation of Huey P. Newton. This supportive relationship was ended by a cold telephone refusal to meet and discuss politics. That's not serving the people. That's a narrow parochial bourgeois brainwashed response that does not think about the masses. Any political group or individual not willing to discuss the development of a United Front Vanguard at this time of great crisis is not serving the masses no matter what they have done in the past.

El Comité also responded to our statement in a not surprising though disheartening manner. They too called off a meeting to discuss politics. Their manner of calling off the meeting is an example of their bourgeois parochial position. There was an embarrassed guilty stalling in stating the real reason for not coming. Finally after several phone calls they "confessed" that they wouldn't talk to us because of our connection with the Labor Committees (NCLC).

The Mental Patients Liberation Project got into the bourgeois act. David Kane of the MPLP was invited to speak at a CFC/ICLC City-Wide Conference on Brainwashing. He was eager to speak at the conference but was "prohibited" from doing so by the MPLP collective because of our association with NCLC. This was conveyed by a sterile phone call. Is that serving the people? NO. It is a petty bourgeois sell out of the people. A sell out that has made the American Movement infamous.

Another response comes from "the voice of the Movement"-Liberation News Service. This group is best known in the petty bourgeois Movement for that infantile episode of several years' back in which one faction of the organization "stole" the whole organization and took it to Massachusetts in a public episode of hippy anarchism which kept the Movement enraptured for several days ala an afternoon soap opera. LNS sent us a temper tantrum:

March 11. 1974

Center for Change/CFC
314 W. 91st Street
New York, N.Y.

Dear CFC:

As of March 1974, you have been permanently deleted from the Liberation News Service list of subscribers and will so longer receive any news packets published by LNS.

Your association and support for the National Caucus of Labor Committees (NCLC) and your purposeful and manipulative distortion of our material in order to fit into your own dangerous conception of politics leaves us no choice but to dissociate ourselves publicly from you and from anything that may appear in your paper, Right on Time. A copy of this letter is being sent to all our New York subscribers.

In the March 7, 1974 issue of Right on Time, you state that: "We accept the vanguard position of the NCLC. We see the Movement for what it is-a CIA-supported phenomena designed to destroy the masses . We follow the leadership of the NCLC."

NCLC has become notorious on the left in the last year. What is most characteristic of their politics, since their inception, are their continuous and flagrant attacks on a variety of leftist groups and activities in many parts of the county. In the guise of the "vanguard," they have sought to discredit the left and make it look foolish. They have purposefully attempted to undermine valuable and progressive work done by some radical organizations.

Your blanket indictment of "the Movement . a CIA-supported phenomena desired to destroy the masses" is just plain crap.

And your distorted use of two graphics which were distributed by LNS, and which you credited to LNS, betrays the unprincipled and dishonest fashion in which you operate.

Specifically, in the March 7, 19 74 issue of Right on Time, on page 4, you ran a copy of a drawing by Buu Chi of a woman political prisoner in South Vietnam with her child which LNS had run. However, underneath the picture you added: "WE DON'T NEED A MOVEMENT, WE NEED A REVOLUTION." The whole graphic was boxed in, including the caption (which was lettered in the style of the drawing), and the BUU CHI/LNS credit appeared directly under the picture, making it seem as though LNS had created the whole graphic-including the caption.

Also in that same issue, on page 6, you ran a graphic which you called "MOVEMENT COMICS." LNS ran that graphic on June 7, 1972-it was titled "CONVENTION COMICS" in reference to the Miami Republican Convention. The gist of the graphic was to warn people of possible agent-provocateur tactics. The original comic strip depicted a secret meeting of a group of bearded men who were discussing various violent acts they were planning for the convention. They all turn out to be agents of one police branch or another-except for one person who escapes from the house. The last frame shows him saying, "See you in Miami at the convention."

You changed that quote by the character escaping the meeting to read, "SO MUCH FOR THE MOVEMENT! WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE . OR ELSE." Then, after editing the comic to change the original meaning to espouse CFC's anti-movement position, you credited the comic to LNS!

We cannot tolerate such dishonesty. We don't want you to use any more of our material. Although we have no means of preventing you from using old LNS graphics and copy that you may now have in your possession, we want other people to know that we dissociate ourselves from you and your paper completely.

The LNS Collective

Some comments on the temper tantrum are in order. First of all, the NCLC has not been responsible for making the left Movement look foolish. The left has done that all by itself. LNS has the petty-bourgeois chutzpah to speak of NCLC's purposeful attempts to undermine progressive work in the context of a put-down letter which they have distributed to their list of subscribers without ever raising the issues discussed with CFC! Their petty-bourgeois horseshit is revealed in such language as "betrays the unprincipled and dishonest fashion in which you operate."

We must point out that we have been regular subscribers to LNS for over a year and have published weekly since then AND have altered graphics with added quotes and changed graphics without ever a word from LNS. We therefore conclude that it is not their principles of the sacredness of THEIR graphics but their defensiveness about our accurate statements about the Movement. In bringing in these arguments about changing graphics to make their point, LNS lets everyone know who "manipulatively distorts materials."

"We cannot tolerate such dishonesty!" says LNS. No wonder the masses have never been moved by the Movement. Such high-minded self-righteousness leaves the working masses justifiably mistrustful. For these self-righteous, pompous, petty-bourgeois statements tell the masses that the Movement does not work for them. These remarks of LNS have the authoritarian manner of the fascists. The LNS letter is fascism.

Why do we expose this behavior? Because the masses of the people must know what the Movement is. The Movement is a bourgeois CIA-controlled phenomenon that works to prevent the development of a vanguard party which will mobilize the working masses. The Movement must not succeed. The United Front Coalition of NCLC-NUWRO-RYM-CFC will not sell out the working class. We will not participate in the destruction of the masses. We will continue to expose the Movement for what it is.

The American Left Movement must be distinguished from the traditional international socialist communist left movement of which Reich speaks. The American Left Movement is a CIA petit-bourgeois phenomenon made up of so many who grew up in the 1950s under the brainwashing influence of Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee. This has left the Left Movement frightened of socialism-communism. Even those groups which label themselves Marxist are fundamentally brainwashed in opposition to communism. Because of this they have been consistently vulnerable to functioning in conditioned ways as CIA lackeys against the masses.

The traditional left, going back to Reich's frighteningly accurate observations about 1934 Germany, has left a political vacuum which has been filled by the American bourgeois Movement, because of its inability to develop a Marxist political psychology which could be used to bring out the boundless enthusiasm of the masses for socialism. This lacking on the part of the socialist-communist organizers has been the norm in Socialist-Communist Parties for the entire century with only a few exceptions. So much of the failure of communist organizations can be attributed to this failure to develop and practice a mass political psychology of socialism. In this respect, Hitler's victory over communism in Central Europe is not at all unlike Roosevelt's victory over communism here in the 1930s; for Roosevelt had a clear mass psychology which the millions of organized communists in this country in the 1930s did not have.

The outstanding example of successfully employed theory of mass political psychology by a Marxist is Mao Tsetung. Though there is serious question about the economic and political deviations of Mao, there can be no question of his understanding of mass psychology.

The question we must ask is: has there been a Marxist Political Psychology developed since Reich's insightful observations? The answer is yes. In Lyn Marcus' Beyond Psychoanalysis we find a correct theoretical statement of Marxist political psychology. Yet there is still something missing. For that statement is itself theoretical and removed from the masses. That is not a criticism. The statement must be transformed into practice by the proper employment of a correct theory of Marxist political-psychological practice. Is there such a correct theory of Marxist psychological practice? Again the answer is yes. That theory has been developed by CFC. (The statement of it will shortly appear in a series of volumes. The first of these, Power and Authority, will be published early in April.)

From a theoretical point of view, these two theories provide the missing theoretical link needed for a vanguard party to mobilize the masses. But organization and mobilization is not a matter of theory; it is a matter of practice. The workers of the Vanguard-NCLC-NUWRO-RYM-CFC-must not refrain from putting into practice the theory of Marcus and CFC on Marxist theory and practice. Failing to put the theory into practice is selling out the human race.

THERE WAS A 1934; THERE IS A 1974. WE MUST, AT ALL COSTS, PREVENT A 1984!
